Asphalt is bought by weight, and the rule of thumb is simple

Compacted hot-mix asphalt runs about 145 lb per cubic foot, which works out to a figure worth memorising: roughly 110 lb per square yard per inch of compacted thickness. A 50 x 12 ft driveway is 66.7 square yards, so at 3 inches that is 66.7 × 110 × 3 = 22,000 lb, or 11 tons.

Unlike aggregate, you do not add a compaction allowance. Asphalt is specified and paid for at its compacted thickness, and the plant and paving crew handle the loose-to-compacted conversion. What you should add is a small waste factor for the edges and the inevitable bit that cools in the truck.

The base matters more than the asphalt

Asphalt is a flexible pavement: it distributes load rather than spanning like concrete, so it is only as good as what is under it. Six to eight inches of compacted dense-graded aggregate under a residential drive is standard, and skimping there is the reason most failed driveways failed. A 3 inch mat over 4 inches of poorly compacted base will alligator-crack within a few years regardless of how good the asphalt was.

Two practical points: hot-mix has to be laid and rolled while hot, which makes this a crew job rather than a weekend one, and paving season is limited — most plants shut down in cold weather and mat temperature at laydown is what determines whether it compacts properly.

For small repairs, cold patch in 50 lb bags covers about 0.5 cubic feet each, which is roughly 2 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Common questions

How many tons of asphalt for a 50x12 driveway?

About 11 tons at 3 inches compacted. The calculation is 66.7 square yards times 110 lb per square yard per inch times 3 inches, which is 22,000 lb.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

Two to three inches of compacted surface over 6-8 inches of compacted aggregate base for residential use. Three to four inches of surface if trucks or RVs will use it.

How much does a ton of asphalt cover?

At 2 inches compacted, about 9 square yards (81 square feet) per ton. At 3 inches, about 6 square yards (54 square feet).

Can I lay asphalt myself?

Hot-mix, realistically no — it has to be spread and rolled within a narrow temperature window and needs a paver and roller. Cold patch in bags is fine for potholes and small repairs and is what it is designed for.
